I think Julie is obsessed with Orange cookies. I think this is the third or fourth cookie experiment with orange in it. Then again a while ago it was cherry, so who am I to complain? I still get to eat them!
The Great Cookie Experiment – Orange Cookies (Not Really Orange, but Nice Try Chocolate Cookies)
These cookies are misnamed. They should not be called Orange cookies. Orange cookies are what I wrote about a couple of weeks ago. They taste like orange. These only slightly taste like orange. I would name them something like “Not really Orange, but Nice Try” Chocolate Cookies.
This recipe really should have been delicious! It starts with a standard cake mix cookie recipe. I love cake mix cookies- they are quick and cheap, and you can make them in all kinds of flavors- my girls prefer the cherry chip cookies especially. If you’ve never made cake mix cookies, the basic recipe is one cake mix, 1/3 cup oil, and 2 eggs. You can add whatever you like to make it interesting. Except what was added to this recipe. This recipe added oatmeal and chopped nuts to the dough, and even with increasing the oil to ¾ cup, the additions dried out the cookie terribly. Not only that, the only reason it’s called and orange cookie is the addition of orange zest- 1 orange worth. I think you can get more orange than that- perhaps with a little orange juice or orange extract as well. As it was, the cookie was dry, crunchy, and fairly flavorless which isn’t at all what you’d expect with a chocolate cake mix and orange zest. Most people trying them said they were…okay….but most really didn’t want to waste the calories on more than a bite.
I will not be making these again, but a part of me does wonder what would happen if I left out the oatmeal and nuts. Or if you used a basic chocolate cookie dough instead of a cake mix. I think that a chocolate and orange combination would be fabulous if you could come up with a way to make it work. These just don’t work.
