Grandma Cornaby’s BBQ Hamburgers

There are a lot of ways to make BBQ Hamburgers and most of them are pretty darn tasty.  However, there is one recipe which has always held a special place in my heart.  I remember these hamburgers coming with us on rock hunting trips and Easter outtings.  They’ve covered much of Utah with the Cornaby kin and fed many a hungry soul.  These are a make-ahead burger which always traveled via a thick silver magnalite cooker wrapped in a blanket, though I found that they work just as well in a kitchen slow cooker.

My mother and I have discussed exactly how Grandma made these burgers, always amazed that she got them to hold together for so long despite all the cooking and the acid of the sauce.  Just this year Mom finally sat down with Grandma and she revealed the secret.  She broils the burger patties in the oven before moving them into the cooker.  The partial cooking makes everything stick together!  How brilliant is that?

So the whole process is slice onions and line the bottom of the slow cooker.  Broil hamburger patties, premade or homemade and set on top of the onions.  Make homemade BBQ sauce as below…or store bought if you reallly want to, but a nice thick sauce is best, and slow cook for 4 hours or cook through for about 2 hours and carry around in the back of a truck, van or car wrapped in blankets until lunch time.  Serve with a side of hunger and a fork or on a bun.  Your choice really.

Cornaby BBQ Sauce

1/3 cup brown sugar

1 Tbl Worcestershire sauce

1 Tbl mustard

3/4 cup catsup

1/4 cup water

1/2 tsp liquid smoke

1 Tbl Ultra Gel

salt and pepper to taste

Mix all ingredients together and pour over meat.  Simmer until warm and thick.  Yield:  1-1 1/2 cups.

  1. I know people who would love these burgers. Perhaps I will use a “Bubba Burger” burger as the burger and see how they do. My hubby is hooked on “Bubba Burgers” brand and just the other day I said I will go on line to find recipes to use Bubba Burgers in. I think this will be one. Thanks so much.
